Taking Care of Your Nails

Your hands are one of the first things people notice about you. So many of us show our hands off every day and, don't realize it. Problems with your nails and hands don't have to be a problem anymore. Treatments for most every problem from weak and brittle to stained nails are easy to come across.

To get to the root of a problem nail, we should first know what our nails are made of. Our nails are made of keratin which is the same substance our bodies use to make hair and the top layer of our skin. The nails we see are actually old cells, pushed out from the root of the nail and onto the nail bed. Keratin is the protein that helps these old cells harden and flatten.

So why keep what are pretty much dead cells healthy and looking good? Because they are still very much attached to healthy and live cells that make up the nail bed, cuticle and root of our nails. Plus, well taken care of nails sure do look good.

Hard, weak and brittle nails can be caused by a number of reasons. Sometimes, your diet or even an illness can contribute to this. Many of us seem to have these problems no matter what we do. Stained nails also are caused by a number of things including dark nail polish left on too long and, smoking. Lucky for us, there are plenty of ways to fix our problem nails.

Lotions, creams and even base coats can help fortify and strengthen your nails. Other top coats, base coats and even creams can help with stained nails as well. Of course, regular care of your nails by trimming, filing and getting regular manicures will keep your nails healthy.

Wait...why a manicure? Why not just at home care? Manicures use specially formulated soaks and creams that are usually only available to salons and spas. Plus, nail technicians are educated to identify and treat targeted issues with your nails. Not to mention manicures are a wonderful way to pamper yourself. With proper care and, proper visits to the salon or spa - your nails will stay healthy and looking great!
